Garage garden bed 2019

This is the bed of daylilies that was planted behind the garage when we moved in.  It is pretty when the daylilies are in bloom but otherwise is a weedy no-man's land. I haven't touched this bed really, except to try to dig up areas in the very back where I planted hollyhocks last year. That was a failed experiment as they could not get a foothold back there behind those already well established and very prolific daylilies!

This last year, it has gotten very weedy.  Those tall plants are awful thistles growing in with the daylilies.  In front, there are a few milkweed plants which self seeded there. I haven't had the heart to pull those this year as I think they are beneficial to monarchs.  But they look weedy so I think I need to find another spot for them once I redo this garden spot!

Weeds galore

Thistles, daylilies and milkweed
I pulled out all of these thistles!!  I have to wear heavy duty construction gloves to handle these things with their stinging hairs.  Tough weeds!

And here is the final product - all weeded. :)  The milkweed is still there for now. I will leave it this season for the butterflies. But eventually I would love to dig up all these daylilies and move them to the woods, and start over with a bed of flowers I like since this is a very warm and full sun area of the yard. Probably why the weeds love it.  I also need to work on the stone path.

And here is the garage daylily bed right after we moved in, in 2016. I have done absolutely nothing except pull out the mammoth thistles which grow here!  So much potential in this spot for a great bed of sun loving flowers.
And all of the creeping charlie and dandelions are in full bloom in this picture too!

Update July 2019:
Here is the garage garden bed with the daylilies in full bloom. This spot is not that bad when they are blooming!
